The Complete Filipino Dating Glossary: 100+ Filipino Dating Terms, Tagalog Love Words, and Cultural Expressions You Should Know
Dating someone from another country is exciting, but it also comes with a learning curve. Every culture has unique traditions, expressions, and ways of showing affection. The Philippines is no exception.
If you’re dating a Filipina, chatting with someone you’ve met online, planning your first visit to the Philippines, or simply interested in Filipino culture, you’ll quickly notice that conversations often include Tagalog words and cultural references that aren’t always easy to understand. While English is one of the official languages of the Philippines and is widely spoken, many Filipinos naturally mix English with Tagalog or other local languages in everyday conversation. This unique blend, often called “Taglish,” is especially common when talking to family, friends, or romantic partners.
You might receive a message saying “Ingat!”, hear your girlfriend refer to her older sister as “Ate,” or be invited to meet her “Lola.” She may tell you that someone is her “Kuya,” ask if you’ve eaten by saying “Kumain ka na?”, or explain that another man is “Nanliligaw” to her. Understanding these words isn’t just about translation. It’s about understanding the culture behind them.
Filipino dating is deeply influenced by family values, respect for elders, strong community ties, hospitality, and sincere communication. Many expressions carry emotional meaning that cannot be translated literally into English. Learning these terms demonstrates genuine interest in your partner’s background and often helps build trust with both her and her family.
This comprehensive glossary explains the most common Filipino dating words, relationship expressions, cultural traditions, and everyday phrases you’ll encounter. For each term, you’ll learn:
- What it means
- How it is used
- Why it matters in Filipino culture
- How it relates to dating and relationships
- Practical examples you may encounter in real conversations
Whether you’re in the early stages of getting to know a Filipina or preparing to meet her family in person, this guide will help you better understand the language and traditions that shape modern relationships in the Philippines.
Let’s begin with one of the most important aspects of Filipino culture: respect.
Family and Respect Terms
Respect is one of the strongest values in Filipino society. Even in modern dating, understanding how Filipinos address family members and older people can make an excellent first impression.
Ate
Pronunciation: AH-teh
Meaning: Older sister.
While “Ate” literally means older sister, it is also commonly used as a respectful way to address an older female cousin, family friend, neighbor, coworker, or even a stranger who appears slightly older than you.
Dating Context
If your Filipina introduces you to her family, you’ll likely hear everyone referring to her older sister as “Ate.”
Example:
“This is my Ate, Maria.”
Even if Maria isn’t your sister, it is respectful to refer to her as Ate as well.
Using “Ate” appropriately demonstrates respect for Filipino family traditions.
Kuya
Pronunciation: KOO-yah
Meaning: Older brother.
Like Ate, Kuya is used both within families and as a respectful title for older men.
Dating Context
You may hear:
“Kuya will pick us up.”
or
“Ask Kuya if he wants dinner.”
Your girlfriend may also refer to an older male cousin, neighbor, or close family friend as Kuya.
Tito
Meaning: Uncle.
Tito refers to your partner’s uncle but is also commonly used for close family friends.
Many Filipinos grow up calling trusted adults Tito and Tita even when they are unrelated.
Why It Matters
Family friendships are extremely important in Filipino culture, and these honorary titles reflect strong community relationships.
Tita
Meaning: Aunt.
Similar to Tito, Tita can refer to an actual aunt or a respected older female family friend.
If you spend time with your partner’s extended family, you’ll probably meet several Titas.
Lolo
Meaning: Grandfather.
Meeting your girlfriend’s Lolo is often considered an important milestone in a serious relationship.
Older family members are usually treated with great respect.
Lola
Meaning: Grandmother.
Lolas often play a significant role in Filipino families.
Many families live together across multiple generations, making grandparents an active part of everyday life.
Don’t be surprised if your Filipina regularly visits or even lives with her Lola.
Po
One of the most important words you’ll ever learn.
Po has no direct English translation.
Instead, it is added to sentences to show politeness and respect.
Examples:
- Thank you, po.
- Yes, po.
- Good evening, po.
If you’re meeting your girlfriend’s parents, using “Po” appropriately will almost always be appreciated.
Opo
A respectful version of “Yes.”
Instead of saying:
“Oo.”
Many Filipinos say:
“Opo.”
This simple difference communicates humility and respect.
Mano (Pagmamano)
Pagmamano is a traditional Filipino gesture of respect shown to older family members.
The younger person gently takes the elder’s hand and briefly touches it to their forehead while saying:
“Mano po.”
Should Foreigners Do This?
Not necessarily.
If you’re introduced to an older family member, a warm handshake and polite greeting are perfectly acceptable.
However, understanding this tradition helps you appreciate Filipino family values.
Filipino Dating and Courtship Terms
Filipino dating combines traditional customs with modern relationships. While younger generations often date similarly to couples elsewhere in the world, many traditional concepts are still respected.
Ligaw
One of the most important Filipino dating words.
Ligaw refers to the traditional Filipino courtship process.
Unlike casual dating, Ligaw usually involves clear romantic intentions from the beginning.
Historically, a man would visit the woman’s home, spend time with her family, and gradually earn their trust before officially becoming a couple.
Today, Ligaw has evolved.
Modern courtship often happens online through messaging, video calls, and social media before eventually meeting in person.
However, sincerity, consistency, and respect remain important values.
Manliligaw
A Manliligaw is someone who is courting a woman.
Example:
“She has three manliligaw.”
Meaning:
Three men are trying to win her heart.
Unlike casual dating, being a Manliligaw usually implies genuine romantic intentions.
Panliligaw
Panliligaw refers to the overall courtship process.
It includes:
- getting to know each other
- building trust
- spending time together
- introducing family
- showing consistency
Nobyo
Boyfriend.
Although “boyfriend” is commonly used in English, Nobyo is still understood and occasionally used.
Nobya
Girlfriend.
Kasintahan
Kasintahan means romantic partner.
It can refer to either a boyfriend or girlfriend depending on the context.
Compared to Nobyo or Nobya, Kasintahan often sounds slightly more formal or poetic.
Magkasintahan
This means “a couple” or “people who are in a relationship.”
Example:
“They have been magkasintahan for three years.”
MU (Mutual Understanding)
One of the most commonly used modern dating terms.
MU describes a stage where two people clearly have romantic feelings but have not officially defined the relationship.
Think of it as being more than friends but not yet boyfriend and girlfriend.
Talking Stage
Filipinos frequently use this English expression.
The talking stage refers to getting to know someone before entering an official relationship.
Many online relationships begin here.
Situationship
Another English word commonly used among younger Filipinos.
A situationship describes an undefined romantic relationship without clear commitment.
Exclusive
Modern Filipino couples often use this English term exactly as Western couples do.
Being exclusive means neither person is dating anyone else.
LDR (Long-Distance Relationship)
Because millions of Filipinos work overseas and many international couples begin online, LDR is one of the most common relationship abbreviations you’ll encounter.
Many successful Filipino relationships begin as long-distance relationships before eventually meeting in person.
Understanding the challenges of LDRs is an important part of modern Filipino dating.
Love and Relationship Expressions
One of the most rewarding parts of dating a Filipina is discovering the little expressions that make everyday conversations feel warm and personal. Many Filipino couples naturally switch between English and Tagalog, often within the same sentence. These words aren’t just translations, they carry emotional meaning that reflects Filipino culture and the importance placed on care, affection, and family.
Learning a few of these expressions can help you better understand your partner and make your conversations feel more natural.
Mahal
Pronunciation: mah-HAHL
Meaning: Love or expensive.
“Mahal” is one of the most interesting Tagalog words because it has two completely different meanings depending on the context.
Examples:
Mahal kita.
“I love you.”
Mahal ang bag na ito.
“This bag is expensive.”
Native speakers immediately understand which meaning is intended based on the conversation.
Dating Context
Many couples simply call each other “Mahal” as a nickname.
Example:
“Good morning, Mahal.”
It’s one of the most common affectionate names you’ll hear in Filipino relationships.
Mahal Kita
Meaning: I love you.
This is perhaps the most famous Tagalog romantic phrase.
Unlike saying “I like you,” Mahal Kita expresses genuine love and emotional commitment.
Example
“Mahal kita. Thank you for always supporting me.”
If you’re dating a Filipina, don’t feel pressured to say these words immediately. Just like in any healthy relationship, they carry significant emotional weight.
Miss Kita
Meaning: I miss you.
Long-distance relationships are common among international couples, making this one of the most frequently used phrases.
Example:
“Miss na kita.”
Translation:
“I really miss you.”
The word “na” emphasizes that the feeling is happening now or has grown stronger.
Ingat
Meaning: Take care.
“Ingat” is probably one of the most commonly used words you’ll receive from a Filipina.
Examples:
- Ingat!
- Ingat ka.
- Ingat sa biyahe.
Translation:
- Take care.
- Be careful.
- Have a safe trip.
Why It Matters
While it seems simple, telling someone to “take care” is a daily expression of affection in the Philippines.
Many Filipinos say it naturally every time someone leaves home, drives somewhere, or ends a conversation.
Kumain Ka Na?
Literal Meaning: Have you eaten?
This question often surprises foreigners.
In many Western countries, asking someone if they’ve eaten might seem like a practical question.
In the Philippines, it’s frequently an expression of care.
Rather than asking specifically about food, it often means:
- How are you?
- Are you taking care of yourself?
- I hope you’re okay.
Dating Context
Don’t be surprised if your Filipina asks this every day.
It’s usually her way of showing affection.
Good Morning and Good Night Messages
Daily greetings are an important part of many Filipino relationships.
Many couples send messages like:
- Good morning.
- Have a great day.
- Eat your lunch.
- Ingat.
- Good night.
- Sweet dreams.
While this varies from person to person, consistent communication is generally appreciated, especially in long-distance relationships.
Text Kita
Meaning: I’ll text you.
Although English is commonly used, this Taglish phrase combines English and Tagalog naturally.
Example:
“Text kita later.”
Translation:
“I’ll text you later.”
Tawag Kita
Meaning: I’ll call you.
Example:
“Tawag kita after work.”
Translation:
“I’ll call you after work.”
Pwede?
Meaning: Is it okay?

“May I call you?”
Politeness and asking permission are often appreciated in Filipino culture.

Marriage and Family Traditions
Family plays a central role in Filipino relationships. When a relationship becomes serious, it’s common for both families to become involved.
Understanding these traditions can help you appreciate the importance many Filipinos place on commitment and respect.
Kasal
Meaning: Wedding.
Example:
“We’re planning our kasal next year.”
Filipino weddings are often family-centered celebrations that include relatives from both sides.
Pamamanhikan
One of the most well-known Filipino marriage traditions.
Pamamanhikan is the formal meeting between the groom’s family and the bride’s family before marriage.
Historically, the groom’s family visited the bride’s parents to ask for their blessing.
Today, practices vary, but many families still observe some version of this tradition.
Dating Context
If your relationship becomes serious, learning about Pamamanhikan can help you understand your partner’s expectations and family values.

Millions of Filipinos work overseas to support their families.
Because of this, many Filipinas have relatives living abroad.
Understanding the role OFWs play in Filipino society helps explain why long-distance relationships are relatively common.
Filipino Cultural Values That Influence Dating
Perhaps the biggest difference between simply translating Filipino words and truly understanding Filipino dating is appreciating the cultural values behind them.
These concepts influence communication, conflict resolution, family relationships, and expectations within romantic partnerships.
Hiya
Hiya is one of the most important cultural concepts in the Philippines.
It loosely translates as:
- avoiding embarrassment
- maintaining dignity
- preserving respect
However, Hiya is much deeper than simply being shy.
Dating Example
A Filipina may hesitate to openly disagree with you in front of others because she doesn’t want to embarrass either of you.
Rather than assuming she’s hiding her opinion, understanding Hiya can help you communicate more thoughtfully.
Pakikisama
Pakikisama refers to maintaining harmony and getting along with others.
Filipinos generally value cooperation and avoiding unnecessary conflict.
Dating Context
This doesn’t mean problems should never be discussed.
Instead, disagreements are often approached respectfully and privately.
Utang na Loob
One of the most misunderstood Filipino concepts.
It literally means “debt of gratitude.”
When someone helps another person significantly, there is often a strong sense of appreciation and a desire to repay kindness in the future.
Dating Context
This value often explains why Filipinos remain close to family members who have supported them throughout life.
It should never be confused with financial debt.
Bayanihan
Bayanihan represents community spirit and helping others without expecting immediate reward.
Historically, neighbors would literally help move an entire house together.
Today, the word symbolizes generosity, cooperation, and supporting one another during difficult times.
Respeto
Respect is one of the foundations of Filipino relationships.
This includes respect for:
- parents
- grandparents
- older siblings
- teachers
- family traditions
Showing genuine respect toward your partner’s family often leaves a lasting positive impression.
Family First
Although not a Tagalog word, this cultural value deserves its own section.
Many Filipinos prioritize family when making important life decisions.
This doesn’t mean your relationship comes second.
Instead, family is often viewed as an extension of your support system.
When dating a Filipina, it’s common to:
- meet her parents relatively early
- communicate with siblings
- attend family gatherings
- celebrate birthdays and holidays together
Being welcomed by her family is often a significant milestone in the relationship.
Hospitality
Filipinos are internationally known for their hospitality.
If you visit your partner’s home, don’t be surprised if you’re repeatedly offered food, drinks, desserts, and snacks.
Accepting a small portion is generally considered polite and shows appreciation for their generosity.
Understanding this cultural warmth helps explain why many foreigners feel immediately welcomed when visiting the Philippines for the first time.
Filipino Food, Gifts, and Everyday Lifestyle Terms
Food is at the heart of Filipino culture. Whether you’re visiting the Philippines for the first time, meeting your partner’s family, or simply chatting online, conversations often revolve around meals, snacks, and sharing food.
In the Philippines, offering someone food is one of the most common ways to show hospitality, appreciation, and affection. Don’t be surprised if your Filipina frequently asks what you’ve eaten or sends you photos of her meals. It’s a natural part of everyday communication.
Understanding these common food-related expressions will help you feel more connected to Filipino culture.
Merienda

“Kain tayo.”
Translation:
“Let’s eat.”
This invitation reflects Filipino hospitality.
Kain Tayo
Although it literally means “Let’s eat,” Filipinos often say this even if there isn’t enough food for everyone.
It’s considered a polite gesture rather than a literal invitation.
If someone says “Kain tayo” while they’re eating, they are welcoming you and showing friendliness.
Adobo
Perhaps the Philippines’ most famous dish.
Adobo typically consists of chicken or pork slowly cooked with soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, peppercorns, and bay leaves.
Every family has its own recipe.

If your partner jokingly asks whether you’ll eat Balut, she’s probably testing how adventurous you are with Filipino cuisine.
Gift-Giving Traditions
Gift-giving is another important part of Filipino culture.
While expensive presents are not expected, thoughtful gestures are appreciated.

Common Mistakes Foreigners Make
Understanding Filipino words is helpful, but understanding the culture behind them is even more important.
Here are a few common misunderstandings that international daters sometimes have.
Assuming every question is literal
Questions like:
“Have you eaten?”
or
“Did you get home safely?”
are often expressions of care rather than requests for information.
Underestimating the importance of family
Family approval is important to many Filipinas.
Taking time to get to know her parents, siblings, and relatives shows respect and genuine commitment.
Expecting direct communication in every situation
Because values such as Hiya and Pakikisama encourage harmony, some Filipinos may communicate disagreements more gently than you might expect.
Rather than assuming your partner is avoiding a topic, encourage honest conversations in a kind and respectful way.
Thinking every Filipina is the same
The Philippines has more than 7,000 islands, hundreds of dialects, and diverse regional cultures.
Someone from Manila may have different traditions and experiences than someone from Cebu, Davao, Baguio, or Iloilo.
Approach every relationship with curiosity and avoid stereotypes.
Focusing only on learning words
Knowing Tagalog vocabulary is useful, but kindness, patience, honesty, and consistency matter far more than perfect pronunciation.
Making an effort to understand your partner’s culture will always leave a stronger impression than memorizing dozens of phrases.
Frequently Asked Questions About Filipino Dating Terms
Below are some of the most common questions people ask when learning about Filipino dating, Tagalog love words, and relationship culture.
Do I need to speak Tagalog to date a Filipina?
No. English is one of the official languages of the Philippines, and most Filipinas, especially those using international dating platforms, speak English well.
That said, learning a few Tagalog words demonstrates genuine interest in her culture and is often appreciated. Even simple expressions like Salamat (Thank you), Ingat (Take care), or Mahal Kita (I love you) can make conversations feel more personal.
Remember, communication, honesty, and respect are far more important than speaking perfect Tagalog.
Why do Filipinas ask, “Have you eaten?”
If a Filipina asks “Kumain ka na?” (Have you eaten?), she usually isn’t checking your meal schedule.
In Filipino culture, asking about food is a way of showing care and concern for someone’s well-being. It’s similar to asking:
- How are you?
- Are you taking care of yourself?
- Is everything okay?
Rather than seeing it as a routine question, recognize it as a small expression of affection.
What does “Mahal Kita” mean?
Mahal Kita means “I love you.”
It’s one of the most meaningful romantic expressions in Tagalog and is generally reserved for genuine feelings of love rather than casual attraction.
If you’re still getting to know someone, there’s no need to rush into saying it. Like in any healthy relationship, it’s best when the words reflect your true emotions.
What’s the difference between “Mahal” and “Mahal Kita”?
Mahal simply means love or my love when used as a nickname.
Examples:
- Good morning, Mahal.
- I miss you, Mahal.
Mahal Kita is a complete sentence meaning:
“I love you.”
What is “Ligaw”?
Ligaw is the traditional Filipino courtship process.
Historically, a man would spend time getting to know the woman and her family before officially becoming her boyfriend.
Modern dating has evolved, especially with online communication, but many Filipinos still value sincerity, consistency, respect, and genuine intentions, qualities that have always been part of Ligaw.
What does “MU” mean?
MU stands for Mutual Understanding.
It describes two people who clearly like each other but haven’t officially defined their relationship.
You can think of it as the stage between friendship and becoming boyfriend and girlfriend.
Is family really that important in Filipino relationships?
For many Filipinas, yes.
Family often plays a significant role throughout life, and introducing a serious partner to parents or close relatives is an important milestone.
This doesn’t mean every family is the same, but showing kindness and respect toward your partner’s loved ones is generally appreciated.
Should I learn Tagalog before visiting the Philippines?
You don’t need to be fluent, but learning basic greetings and polite expressions can make your visit more enjoyable.
Some useful phrases include:
- Hello
- Thank you
- Take care
- Yes
- No
- Excuse me
- Good morning
- Good evening
Locals often appreciate foreigners who make an effort to learn even a few words.

Using them correctly demonstrates humility and respect, two qualities that are highly valued in Filipino culture.
What does “Ingat” mean?
Ingat means “Take care.”
It’s one of the most common expressions you’ll receive from a Filipina.
Whether you’re heading to work, driving home, or ending a video call, hearing “Ingat” simply means she cares about your safety and well-being.
What are common nicknames Filipino couples use?
Some of the most popular include:
- Mahal
- Love

- Baby
- Honey
- Dear
- Bebe
- Labs
Every couple develops their own preferences, and many also create unique nicknames over time.

While Tagalog (Filipino) is the national language, many Filipinas speak other native languages as their first language, including:
- Cebuano
- Ilocano
- Hiligaynon
- Waray
- Kapampangan
- Bicolano
Most people also speak English, making communication much easier for international couples.
What is Taglish?
Taglish is a blend of Tagalog and English.
Many Filipinos naturally switch between both languages within the same conversation.
For example:
“I’ll call you later, ha? Ingat!”
This style of communication is completely normal in everyday life.
Is online dating common in the Philippines?
Yes.
Online dating has become increasingly popular throughout the Philippines.
Many successful international relationships begin through dating apps, video calls, and social media before couples eventually meet in person.
Like any form of dating, it’s important to take your time, communicate openly, and prioritize safety.
Are Filipino dating customs changing?
Absolutely.
While traditional values such as respect, family, and commitment remain important, modern Filipino dating is influenced by technology, international travel, and changing lifestyles.
Many couples now meet online, communicate through messaging apps, and build strong long-distance relationships before meeting face-to-face.
Final Thoughts
Learning Filipino dating terms is about much more than expanding your vocabulary.
Every word reflects a piece of Filipino culture, from the importance of family and respect to the warmth, hospitality, and genuine care that many Filipinos show in everyday life. Whether it’s hearing “Ingat” before ending a phone call, being welcomed with “Kain tayo” during a family gathering, or understanding why someone asks “Kumain ka na?”, these small expressions help you appreciate the deeper meaning behind the language.
As your relationship grows, you’ll likely discover that communication isn’t just about translating words. It’s about understanding traditions, values, humor, and the little habits that make each culture unique. Taking the time to learn these expressions shows curiosity, respect, and a willingness to embrace your partner’s background, qualities that can strengthen any relationship.
It’s also important to remember that the Philippines is an incredibly diverse country. With thousands of islands, hundreds of languages and dialects, and countless local traditions, no single glossary can capture every expression you’ll encounter. Your partner may use words that are unique to her region, family, or community, and that’s part of what makes learning about Filipino culture so rewarding.
The best approach is to stay curious. If you hear a new word or phrase, ask what it means. Most Filipinos are happy to explain their language and traditions, and those conversations often become memorable moments in the relationship.
Whether you’re chatting with a Filipina online, planning your first visit to the Philippines, or preparing to meet her family, understanding these common dating terms will help you communicate more naturally and appreciate the culture behind the language.
We hope this complete Filipino dating glossary has given you a valuable introduction to the words and traditions that shape relationships in the Philippines.
Happy learning, and best wishes on your Filipino dating journey!
